No one says to me, “Don, your toenails are really getting ugly.” Not to my face anyway. However, with aging from my 50s to my 60s and then on to my 70s, my toenails appear to be taking a beating. I’ll spare you the details, but they are not pretty.
I’ve never been the type of guy at social functions to strip off my shoes and socks and say, “Check these beauties out.” In fact, not that there’s anything wrong with it, I find it strange to see a bunch of men sitting in salon chairs having their toenails played with by women in blue outfits. And, I would hardly look at my feet at all, but I can’t help seeing my toes after taking a shower or removing my socks.
My doctor friend said I might be prone to fungal infections. He asked if my feet hang out in warm, moist areas. I said, “Duh, I wear socks and sweat a lot.”
He gave me a tip: when relaxing at home, go barefoot. I’m three weeks into this medical advice, patiently waiting for my toenails to respond to their new freedom.
So far, I’m not seeing a lot of results.
