With my lower back issues, it’s getting increasingly difficult for me to walk upstairs.
That didn’t keep me from a Wisconsin Badger Football game last weekend. Right before halftime, I began the climb from my row up to the second level of Camp Randall stadium. The first 15 or 20 steps were okay but then the pain and lack of mobility kicked in. I bore down like any great fan would. I stared at each step, gritted my teeth and used my right arm and hand to drive my right leg up and forward.
The band was playing the Wisconsin fight song. Cheers were coming from the 80,000 in attendance. I kept plowing up the cement steps looking for daylight.
At the top a small group of ladies dressed in Bucky Badger garb gave me an empathetic cheer in unison, “We were hoping you could make it to the top!”
For a brief moment I felt embarrassment for making an awkward scene.
Then I smiled and gave them each a high five.
