As I’m getting into my senior years, it dawns on me what I wish to put on my tombstone.
“Here lies Don. He’s undone.”
When it’s time for me to go to heaven, or at least to some spectacular spot, I know I’ll be in the midst of doing a whole bunch of things that will be left unfinished.
The whole mindset of wrapping things up as one ages has been totally lost on me. Instead, I keep unwrapping wonderful adventures that I know will never reach the finish line. In fact, I think I was born and groomed for starting things – and I’m not very good at finishing them.
A few examples:
I want to pull every foxtail weed in my yard and get the entire root of those darn suckers.
I want Carson City to be appreciated for its great contribution to wild west American history and share it with children from around the world. I still dream of ways of making that happen.
I want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
I want fearful individuals who have fallen into a hole, whether due to mental health issues, addiction or brushes with the law, to recognize they possess the fortitude to make their lives more meaningful and joyous. It’s up to them to make it happen. The Change Companies® has done significant work in this area, but we can do so much more.
I want to look everyone I love in the eyes and tell them how fortunate I’ve been to know them.
I want to consume a large chocolate marshmallow milkshake without feeling any sense of guilt.
