Looking
back on my high school football career, I could have been a great player.
Only a couple things stood in my way.
First off, I didn’t like to get tackled. And I wasn’t fond of tackling others.
It came down to not wanting to put myself in a position to experience an
unnecessary level of pain.
A second factor was my being very slow compared to other boys at my grade
level. I could have overcome this deficiency by being particularly agile or
strong. I was neither.
Now, in my elder years, I love to share football stories with friends of mine.
I let them go first and smile and nod as I hear about exciting gridiron
heroics.
When it’s my turn, I simply say, “I could have been a great football
player.”
Then I shut up.
