It’s so simple. It works for me. However, I keep forgetting to do it.
I’m talking about mindful breathing – paying attention to my breath while I’m active. When I walk, when I climb the stairs, when I ride my bike – whatever I’m doing, I do it better if I stay mindful of my breath. I have a trainer named Johnny who tells me to breathe through my nose. That’s easy for me to do when I’m just sitting or standing around. However, when I’m moving fast, I find I automatically switch my breathing from my nose to my mouth.
When I was a younger guy, I paid no attention to such matters. I didn’t give a whit how I was breathing. Now, fit friends of mine and many health articles I read promote breathing more mindfully.
When I remember to focus on my breathing, good things happen. It lowers my blood pressure. I stay more calm. It reduces my chronic pain.
As I finish this blog, I’m focusing on my breathing. Give it a try.
