“The path to change is seldom smooth or straight.”
– James O. Prochaska
Jim Prochaska is a leading researcher and author on behavior change – and a good friend of mine. Jim must have observed my lifetime when he made this simple but astute comment.
When I was a struggling student, I knew I wanted to change my behavior to be more disciplined in my studies. I bought an expensive calendar to organize my day. I set up meetings with my college professors. I read some great motivational books. I even purchased a new desk for my fraternity room.
Shortly thereafter, I met a new, demanding girlfriend. I found a pub in Champaign, Illinois, that did not check IDs, and I hung out with my old buddies. By summer, I received a formal-looking letter from the University informing me I was no longer a student.
I have many other examples to prove Jim right, including a few I’d just as soon keep secret.
The truth is, although change is seldom smooth or straight, positive change can and does take place.
Eventually, I received a Master of Science degree with honors from Iowa State University.
And my life is better for it.
