Last Saturday, Sherry and I found a dead doe on our property who had recently given birth. We sadly disposed of the body, which showed no signs of disease or wounds.
The next morning, our four white Swiss shepherds surrounded a tiny fawn and guided her gently down the mountain and toward our front porch. I’ve never seen anything like it. Each time the little deer attempted to slip away on wobbly legs, our dogs shepherded her closer to our doorway.
Sherry grabbed a couple blankets and wrapped the baby fawn in her lap while Nigel, Sammy, Jody Beth and Zeke sat proudly by.
My friend Larry got on the phone to find a place to take our new pal on a Sunday morning. After hours of searching, Larry found a friendly voice at Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary, located east of Lovelock, Nevada – over 150 miles from Washoe Valley. We took off in a windstorm with our baby fawn in the back of my Chevy Suburban.
We arrived at a magical place. Three grad students were waiting to comfort the fawn and get her to drink goat’s milk from a bottle. The owner, Lynda Sugasa, took us for a tour of the sanctuary, where lions, tigers, bears and any other abandoned and injured wild animal can live in safety and peace.
That darn fawn ate up my whole day. And it was the best Sunday I’ve spent in a blue moon.
