I’ve made at least 50 video calls over the past month, and I feel I’m getting shorted. In other words, I think most of these calls suck.
My staff, my friends, even my family say, “Oh boy, let’s get together on Zoom!” They smile. I cringe.
On Zoom, people try so hard to connect. Participants nod their heads and make cute remarks. Some folks have their heads plastered against the screen. Others have made special preparations, with fireplaces and family photos in the background.
I find much of it pretty phony. Even absurd. There may be eight faces on my screen, and everyone thinks real communication is taking place. Minds are being changed. Souls are being touched.
Maybe this is the best we can do during this time of COVID.
However, I pray the day is coming when I can see the full faces of these people and look straight into their eyes. I can warmly shake their hands – even hug some of them. And when we finish our conversations, I can walk them to the door. And keep that door wide open.
