I admit it’s a crappy poem. I wrote it many years ago, during a period of alcohol, drugs and despair.
I hesitate to share it with you today, but I recognize so many of my friends are suffering from loneliness.
I was reading the book “Together,” written by Vivek Murthy, the former Surgeon General of the United States. It reminded me we can beat this darn lonely world so many of us (particularly men) are stuck in.
Loneliness
Loneliness would smother me
so much
in bars and buses
that I would meet myself
under a blanket of despair
and attempt to cry,
but tomorrow seemed so far away
and today had already disengaged
so my tears
had no place to flow.
Now, at 75, I’m one of the happiest, most engaged individuals in Washoe County. If this terrible poet moved out of depression by simply reaching out for help, you can too.
Trust me on this.
