Shortly before my mom and dad died in 1999, I created tailored journals for them to chronicle their lives as children and young adults.
I cherish their stories today as I match their memories with pictures I have of them back on their farms in central Iowa.
Below are a few highlights from my dad:
The small school was next to our house, only separated by a wire fence. The teachers would board with us during the week. This encouraged me to be a good student and stay clear of shenanigans.
In the spring of 1924, an airplane flew over the schoolhouse and our teacher, Agnes Yegge, had all the kids run out to look up at the contraption because it was a passing fancy. “After all,” she said, “the Bible tells us the sky was created for the birds.”
There are many other gems sprinkled through his journal.
I was so lucky to have Vern as my dad.
We’ll catch up with Irene on Monday.
