Good friends make fun of me when they discover I enjoy singing along to country and western songs. I take the insults with great pride and belt out, “I’m a member of a country club. Country music is what I love.” That generally gets the bad guys on their way.
These are the three things I appreciate most about good country songs:
1. I can understand the words being sung (not true for me with most music these days).
2. The story lines are simple, and it’s repeated if I don’t get it the first time (I’m a sucker for trains, lost loves, pickup trucks and “momma”).
3. Country singers are approachable. I’m proud to say several country musicians are good friends of mine. I know I can ring them up when I’m in trouble and they’ll come running to my rescue.
“Well, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.”
