Costco is my new playground.
I go with Sherry, and while she is pushing one of those big carts and getting needed supplies, I’m floating around, looking for fun stuff to occupy my time.
My latest game is to go up to people I have never met and say, “I can’t find my wife. Have you seen her?”
Their responses are wonderful. Here are a few of my favorites:
“Who in the hell are you?” (angry man with gallons of gin in his cart)
“She’s probably hiding from you. I can’t blame her.” (young mother of three)
“I lost my wife in here last year. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” (man my age who enjoys games too)
“What does she look like, and what’s in her cart?” (someone who cares… maybe too much)
Then a fit woman in her 70s, who had a wonderful twinkle in her eyes, stared at me for a full 30 seconds and responded with a smile, “Sure Hiram, I saw her waiting for you at your car in the back parking lot. You’d better get moving.”
Here’s what I’ve learned at 75. Have fun. Play games. Hang out at Costco.
