I’ve been mostly retired for a couple months now. I don’t feel like a retirement expert, but boy, I’ve learned a few things the hard way.
Don, it’s not necessary to get up at 5 each morning as if you have some place to go at 6:30. No one is waiting for you at the office. Stay in bed. Your former staff will appreciate it.
Don, it’s your job to organize your day. It’s no longer handed to you. Make a list. Add notes in your calendar of things you wish to accomplish. Do something, just for the heck of it.
Don, free time is not something you need to feel guilty about. Think of it as an opportunity to explore new stuff.
Don, you might have to be the initiator of communication with others. Many of those calls you used to receive were because of your job title, not because they all wanted to be your friend.
Don, stop chomping down on comfort food in an effort to soothe your feelings of loss. It’s your job to replace the love of your job with something other than hot cinnamon rolls, chocolate malts and french fries.
Don, don’t isolate. Don’t let a little pain keep you from a magnificent day.
Don, just plain don’t be stupid.
