Aging and chronic pain seemed to grow together for many of my friends and me. If they choose, older men can talk forever about the probable sources of their pain, the intensity it rises to and potential cures. One breakfast, my group of friends got so disgusted at ourselves, we established a law dictating only the first five minutes of any conversation could dwell on our medical woes.
Things got very still after the first five minutes. Everyone quietly studied their menus. However, in time we discovered we led lives filled with 15-foot putts, spectacular grandchildren, empty mousetraps and books we claimed we read from cover to cover. I’m glad lower back pain is off the menu.
