“How did I get so late, so soon?”
That’s one of my favorite lines from Dr. Seuss. Some days I feel like I’m behind on almost everything – and I’m getting too old for that. At weak moments, I allow others’ expectations to wreak havoc on my serenity. Tick tock, tick tock, Don runs up someone else’s clock.
After all, some moments are meant to be squandered playing carefree games or watching a child lick an ice cream cone.
I don’t know if other older people are shocked at how soon they entered retirement age. I sure was. One morning I woke up from a peaceful dream about being in my seventies and discovered before my first cup of coffee that I truly was 74.
I’m not much for bucket lists. Most of the things I want to do are repeating experiences in my life that brought me great joy. I want to make another loop around the Tahoe Rim Trail. I’d like to start one, maybe two, new corporations. I’d like to reread everything Mark Twain ever wrote. I want to raise and love more puppies. I want to spend more moments with people I love.
How did I get so late, so soon?
It’s a good question for me to ponder. Tick tock.
