Several of my blog friends have asked about Ben, who entered hospice care in May. It sounds strange, but Ben is failing in a most remarkable and wonderful way.
As expected, his daily options are reduced. A hospital bed was moved in on the first floor of his home. He is now on oxygen 24/7. Getting out of bed is a major project. Moving small distances is a time-consuming chore.
Now for the good signs.
Ben’s mind remains sharp. He continues to teach me about the things that really count. He stays curious.
Ben prays daily. His faith is strong. It reassures him that his upcoming passage will bring him peace and joy.
Ben receives outstanding support from his family. His wife, Ann, is always just a few feet away. His children visit often. Old friends call and stop by.
Ben’s hospice care is outstanding. Nurses now come twice per week, making sure he is as comfortable as possible.
Ben’s sense of humor is ever-present. He makes those around him smile.
Ben has become a hero of mine. I hope I can one day follow his path.
