Yesterday was not a good day.
Here’s how it went. I come home from work with hardcopy pages for a book I’m writing. I have a great editor who has taken around 150 pages and used Post-it notes to tag areas for further development. This project is moving along ahead of schedule.
My cell phone rings, and I walk into the house to take the call. Thirty minutes later, I step outside and my wonderful shepherd, Jody Beth, greets me at the door. She has a sheet of paper in her mouth. I look out on the yard, and hundreds of scraps of paper are on the ground or floating in the brisk afternoon breeze.
With a new right hip and a heavy heart, it takes me nearly an hour to pick up the scraps. Jody Beth follows me around as I bend over and attempt to match pages with Post-it notes that may provide clues to my creative efforts.
Jody Beth wants me to pet her. When I was a younger man, I would have shouted to make her feel guilty.
Today, I smile and thank Jody Beth for her artistic contributions.
