When I’d mess up in my private or business life, I learned to find someone who was doing it right and copy his or her successful approach. It helped me out of jams over and over again.
In Reno, on South Virginia Street, there are two fast food restaurants across the street from each other. On the west side is an In-N-Out Burger place. It’s always packed, with 20 or more cars lined up for takeout and a full house inside.
On the east side of Virginia Street is a Burger King. Two or three cars are in the parking lot. One of them might belong to the cook. Sadly, it’s a very lonely place.
My tip of the day: If I owned the Burger King restaurant, I would mosey over across the street and observe what the heck is going so right at In-N-Out Burger. It appears hundreds of hungry customers are “having it their way” by choosing hamburgers and fries at this spot and not at “my spot.”
How many of us stick to our failing ways rather than copying the winning approach by someone across the street?
I think I might be failing at retirement. I’m going to start looking around for the winners.
