A new friend (let’s call him Robert) asked me to his home for lunch.
It turns out we both have an interest in the relationship between the second and third presidents of the United States. In fact, I believe the close friendship between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson has much to offer to me as I approach the latter years of my life.
As Founding Fathers of our nation, the two men built a close relationship. Later, they became bitter rivals as their political beliefs and ambitions clashed.
But here’s the nugget. Over time, they recognized the love they had for each other and reunited as close friends until they both died on the same day: July 4, 1826.
So, Robert is going to be Jefferson and I am going to be Adams during our lunch. We’ll play out history. What fun it will be.
Hopefully, the greatest lesson will be that old friends can be reunited, regardless of the issues that split them apart.
Before night falls, I plan to call an old friend. We fought over silly stuff and haven’t communicated for two decades. It’s high time we hug.
