I deserve a dog biscuit. It’s been months since I’ve featured one of my shepherds in a blog post. Now I can’t help myself.
Of our four white Swiss shepherds, Sammy Watt What is our comedian. Although all four were sired by the same father, Sammy is special.
A few examples:
Sammy buries a ball deep in the sand, using his nose to cover it up. I can tell he’s proud of his achievement. However, if none of the other dogs investigate the burial site, Sammy will guide them over to the spot and convince them to dig around. If they are off by a few inches, Sammy helps them discover the magic spot. Once one of the dogs uncovers the buried ball, Sammy growls at the successful shepherd and forces him to drop the ball. Replay for hours.
Chow time. All four dogs are given their bowls at the same time. Three dogs eagerly dive in and finish their meals in minutes. Sammy casually watches them. When they are done, Sammy moseys up to his bowl and sniffs the contents. He makes sure the other dogs have gathered around. Sammy commences his meal like a persnickety old chap.
Sammy Watt What attempts to climb trees to meet a new hawk in the neighborhood. Failure has never stopped his optimism or enthusiasm. He often gets higher than one can imagine. However, the hawk is not worried and may be amused.
I could go on and on.
As I age, I’d like to be more like Sammy.
