I’ve been attempting to retire for over a decade, and I’ve been a total flop so far.
Christine, a new, young employee of The Change Companies®, introduced me to the work of Don Clifton, who is known as the father of strengths-based psychology. She gave me this little book that focuses on 34 areas of strengths. The idea is to figure out which of those strengths best suit me – those I have the greatest potential to further develop.
As I went through the assessment, it dawned on me I can look at retirement in the same fashion I approached my various jobs over these many years. What are my greatest strengths I can build on to finish up my life’s portfolio?
Perhaps most people look at retirement as a way to be relieved of the hassle, pressure and responsibility of a job. My problem is, I’ve always loved my job and there’s nothing I’d rather be doing. That’s why this little book was perfect for me. I’m beginning to look at retirement as my next fantastic job and how can I hone my potential strengths to make the greatest contributions to my family, friends and community.
If I sound a bit like you, I recommend you grab a copy of Strengthsfinder 2.0 from Gallup and get on with the wonderful job of retirement.
