After many years, I figured out how to maintain a thriving company. Get a Susan.
I started The Change Companies® 32 years ago. My wife and I poured our few dollars, our hearts and an abundance of energy into making a go of it. After a couple years, we moved the company from Madison, Wisconsin, to Carson City, Nevada.
Susan Peterson was waiting for us.
I remember interviewing her. I wrote she was spunky and had a “cool” sense of humor. After nearly 30 years, Susan brings those qualities to work each day.
It turned out Susan was willing and capable of doing almost everything. Besides myself, Susan was our first salesperson. She could reel potential customers in over the phone. Today, some of those customers will only speak to Susan.
The Change Companies® is a publishing corporation, and Susan turned out to be an excellent writer and editor. She was courageous, always using robust dialogue to let me know when I was falling short.
Early on, she headed our distribution department, putting Journal pages in binders and boxing them up. She had no fear of getting her hands dirty.
Today, The Change Companies® serves over 5,000 clients in all 50 states. It would have vanished long ago if Susan hadn’t been waiting for us in Carson City.
