I am sad. We can do better.
The tragic event this weekend in Pennsylvania touched me. The “me vs. them” mindset may show its ugly head most dramatically at all levels of government, but my job is to examine what I can do to turn the tide. The issue of a divided nation is a challenge for all of us. A bunch of stuff can be blamed in part: COVID, social media, personal bias, health limitations, aging, etc. But the truth is, I can do a better job of closing the gap each day with those in my immediate circle.
One answer that has popped up in Carson City, Nevada, is called CONNECTIONS. It brings diverse populations together to share stories and ideas. Participants look each other in the eye, they listen, they smile and gain a new understanding of perspectives that are different than their own. Through the power of storytelling, the “me vs. them” thinking is reduced at the local level.
CONNECTIONS is growing like wildfire, moving to Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, Dayton and beyond to become a national model. If you want more information, go to www.connectionscentral.org or email [email protected].
