If you don’t think competition is a good thing, do I have a sweet story for you.
Back in 1912, the National Biscuit Company in New York City was in a slump. The famous Barnum’s Animals cookies were capturing the market. Then, deep inside the National Biscuit Company’s experimental kitchen, two dark wafers were stuck together with some delicious “frosting” in the middle. The first Oreo cookie was born, and the rest is history.
At age 74, my best calculations suggest I’ve devoured 18,484 of the 450 billion Oreos that have been sold. As a youngster, most of my cookies were dipped in a cold glass of milk. As I became older and more sophisticated, I often twisted the wafers apart and scraped off the white icing with my front teeth. Yum.
Although I recognize there are healthier food choices for older men and women like me, on March 6, National Oreo Cookie Day, I celebrated by having two more of my favorite cookies while listening to that 1992 hit by Weird Al Yankovic, “The White Stuff.”
